Portugal had to go to a penalty shootout to secure their qualification against Slovenia (0-0, 3-0 on penalties) this Monday in the Euro 2024 Round of 16.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was heartbroken and in tears after missing a penalty during extra time, shared his feelings following his team’s qualification.
“First there was sadness, then joy at the end. That’s football. Sometimes there are moments you can’t explain. We had opportunities to score in this match, but we didn’t manage to.”
“I failed to score, Oblak made a great save. I’ll review the footage to see if I struck the penalty well or not. I hadn’t missed a penalty all year, and then I miss… But the most important thing is to enjoy this moment. We are through,” the player said after the match.
Portugal will face France in the quarterfinals on Friday, July 5th (9 PM).
